
Dwayne D. Woodruff is a founding partner with the law firm of Woodruff , Flaherty & Fardo.
He is also the Regional Vice President of Capital Asset Research Corporation. A former
defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he played 12 years from 1979 - 1990 and is now
a certified agent of the NFL Player's Association. He is married to the former Joy Maxberry
and has two daughters, Jillian and Jenyce, and a son, John.
A 1979 graduate of the University of Louisville, he holds a Bachelors of Science Degree
in Finance and earned a Juris Doctor Degree in 1988 from the Duquesne University School of
Law, which he attended full time in the evening during his professional football career. He
passed the Allegheny County Bar Exam on his first attempt during his 10th NFL season and
from 1988 to 1990 he enjoyed a dual career, simultaneously practicing law and playing
football. This set precedence for the NFL and professional sports.
Dwayne was drafted in the 6th round by the Steelers in 1979 and played in Super Bowl XIV
as a rookie. He earned a starting line-up spot in 1981 and was voted the team MVP in 1982,
after making five interceptions that season to lead the team and the AFC. He also led the
team in interceptions in 1985, and and ranks fourth on the Steelers all-time list for
interceptions returned for touchdowns. In 1987 he was awarded the NFL? Ed Block Courage
Award for his remarkable comeback after missing the entire 1986 season when a serious knee
injury required major surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
He established the Dwayne D. Woodruff Scholarship in 1984, which annually awards $2000
to a New Richmond (Ohio) High School senior. His high school number was retired there in
1981 to pay tribute to his accomplishments as an honor student and the MVP in football,
basketball, and track while there. His college jersey was honored in 2001 and hangs in Uof
L's Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. He was previously inducted into the University of
Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 1992 and his former church in Louisville,
First Baptist of Jeffersontown, awards annual scholarships in his name to pay tribute to
his service as chairman of the committee, which initiated the awards in 1984.
Currently, Woodruff and his family worship and serve at the Allegheny Center Alliance
Church in Pittsburgh. Legal affiliations are with the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania
Bar Associations, the Homer S. Brown Law Association and as an elected member of the
Pennsylvania House of Delegates. His community affiliates include the Sigma Pi Phi (Business)
Fraternity, the board of the Urban Impact Foundation, the Allegheny County Democratic
Committee and the NAACP (lifetime member since 1980). He has served the community extensively,
including the American Cancer Society as Chairman of the Board for the Pittsburgh Chapter,
the Board of Governors at Duquesne University Law School, Ronald McDonald Children's Charities,
The Champions Association, the Board of Trustees of La Roche College,, Pittsburgh History and
Landmarks Foundation, and The Chuck Cooper Youth Development Association. Dwayne was
appointed to the United Way Points of Light, serving on their Volunteer Recruitment Coalition,
served as chairman of the Law Challenge for the NEED (Negro Educational Emergency Drive)
Program and was elected to and served on the Allegheny County Bar Associationsdiciary
Committee ( which rates all candidates seeking public office.
The annual Dwayne Woodruff Celebrity Golf Classic was held for nine years to benefit
urban youth charities of Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania Special Olympics chose him as their
1998 and 1999 Honorary Chairperson and he was honored to kick off the Games for the
athletes. Also, for three years, Dwayne served as honorary chairperson for the Xerox
Corporation Golf Classic and Willa Bentley Tennis Smash benefiting the Three Rivers Adoption
Services and the Inner City Youth Development Program, respectively.
Among the many honors he has received are the Man of the Year Award by both the Pittsburgh
YMCA in 1990, the Champions Association in 1990 and the Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1989,
for community service. He received the American Cancer Society? Volunteer of the Year Award
in 1993, National College Football Foundations Distinguished American Award in December 1993,
the University of Louisville Alumni Association Order of Merit Award in 1996, and the 1996
Hand In Hand, Inc. Dr. Martin Luther King Outstanding Citizen Award. Additionally, he and his
wife Joy served as U. S. Armed Forces Goodwill Ambassadors in Germany and Austria in June of
1990. Most recently, in October of 2003, Mr Woodruff was honored with 2003 University of
Louisville Alumni Fellow Award for Business.
Mr. Woodruff has been a featured guest on all the Pittsburgh television and radio talks
shows including WPXI? Steelers Sunday and Starting Today Show, KDKA? Pittsburgh Today, WTAE?
Pittsburgh? Talking, City Chronicle and Good Day Pittsburgh, and the Myron Cope Show, WPGH?

Throughout the year he participates in various charity events, especially those which
serve youth. He is a much sought after speaker delivering speeches that are motivational and
inspirational, covering topics in sports, Christianity, law, parenthood, etc. . . . He has
spoken to and made appearances for numerous organizations including business, schools,
churches, and charities all over Pennsylvania and in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
